Students driving for Uber or DoorDash: a tax guide

Tuition credits can wipe out most of your income tax, but CPP on gig income still applies. What students owe, what they can claim, and why filing pays off.

Delivery apps fit around class schedules, so a lot of students use them. The tax rules are the same as for anyone else, but a few things work in your favour.

You still report it all

Being a student doesn't change the rule: all your gig income goes on Form T2125. The platforms report what they paid you to the CRA, whether or not you file.

Tuition credits can cover your income tax

Your school issues a T2202 showing eligible tuition. The tuition credit reduces your income tax, and if you don't need all of it this year, you can carry it forward to future years.

Combined with the basic personal amount, many students who drive part-time owe little or no income tax.

CPP is different

Tuition credits reduce income tax, not CPP. If your net gig profit is above $3,500, you'll owe self-employed CPP at 11.9% on the amount above that. This is the bill that surprises students most.

Income tax after basic personal amount and tuition credit often $0
CPP: ($9,000 − $3,500) × 11.9% $654.50

The upside: those contributions count toward your future CPP pension.

Expenses cut both taxes

Every business expense you claim lowers your profit, which lowers CPP too. Track fuel, insurance, repairs, the business share of your phone and your delivery bag. If you deliver by bike, the bike and its upkeep count.

Why filing pays off

  • GST/HST credit and provincial benefits, like the Ontario Trillium Benefit, are based on your filed return.
  • RRSP room builds from earned income, including net self-employment income, even if you don't contribute yet.
  • Tuition credits only carry forward if you file.

A note on the Canada workers benefit: full-time students enrolled for more than 13 weeks in the year generally aren't eligible, unless they have a dependant.

International students

Study permits have their own work rules, and gig work raises questions beyond tax. Check your permit conditions with IRCC or your school's international office before you start.
